In June, the New England Journal of Medicine published results of a study that showed the combination of mifepristone and misoprostol was more effective than misoprostol alone to help women expel a miscarriage, or what’s known as an early pregnancy loss. That’s when a pregnancy is not viable in the first trimester.
Before these findings were published, women who were miscarrying usually had three options: a surgical procedure to remove the miscarriage, misoprostol alone, or waiting for the miscarriage to pass on its own.
“It ends up adding insult to injury,” says Courtney Schreiber, an OB-GYN in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Pennsylvania and the lead author of the New England Journal study. “The misoprostol alone has really not been a therapeutic intervention.”
In Schreiber’s study, which followed 300 women who were miscarrying, the combination of mifepristone and misoprostol was more effective in helping patients expel the miscarriage. The overall success rate was 90 percent for patients who took both medications, and 76 percent for those who who got misoprostol alone.
“It offers them a sense of control over their own bodies and their own process when they feel that they’ve already lost an element of control,” Schreiber says.
“If you remember the coroner’s report from 2017, his home was littered with drug paraphernalia. It was a treasure trove of drugs. All of the young men that we interviewed all confirmed that he has to be the one to inject you with the meth, that he likes to have control over you, that the more you take, the more money he’s willing to pay you. That only works on vulnerable people, who need money.”

Tugce Albayrak, 23, murdered after protecting two teenage girls from harrassment
Dozens of Germans mourned Sunday over the death of 23-year-old student Tugce Albayrak, who was killed after defending two teenage girls who were reportedly being harassed by a group of men.
The BBCreports that Albayrak was brutally attacked after intervening in the harassment earlier this month. Albayrak reportedly heard “cries for help from the toilet of a fast food restaurant” in the German town of Offenbach before confronting the group of men who were aggressively pursuing the two girls. One of the men later returned and attacked her in a parking garage.
Around 150 people attended a vigil in Berlin in her memory on Sunday, and more than 130,000 people have signed an online petition asking the Germany government to award Albayrak Germany’s national Order of Merit.
“Like countless citizens, I am shocked and appalled by this terrible act. Tugce has earned gratitude and respect from us all,” said German President Joachim Gauck in a letter to the Albayrak family. “She will always remain a role model to us, our entire country mourns with you. Where other people looked the other way, Tugce showed exemplary courage and moral fortitude.”
